Whenever Square Enix puts up a game on the mobile app stores, people are sure to download them. That said, these games are either mobile ports of their old games or simply new, free-to-play ones that use the freemium formula to the company’s advantage. Most games in the latter utilizes the franchise’s best assets: the characters who made it one of the most-loved game series ever. Final Fantasy Opera Omnia is no exception: it uses the series’ heroes and villains, as well as the staple turn-based gameplay. With that said, is it another Final Fantasy game worth spending time on or is it a bust? Let’s find out:

There’s a lot going on in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia’s backstory. In a nutshell, heroes from across the series have been sucked into a single universe. They were gathered by a Moogle in order to fight a creeping invasion from monsters who are somehow getting into the world through portals called “Torsions”. Yes, we know, this is a lot to take and appreciate. Your role is to fight these monsters and close the holes to mop up the mess the warring deities made. Talk about being a glorified janitor.

Jokes aside, long-time Final Fantasy fans and those new to the franchise alike will surely appreciate Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia’s one specific element: the gathering of the series’ characters. This means, you will have guys like Cloud Strife (FF7), Warrior of Light (FF1), and Sazh Katzroy on your team. In addition, iconic characters like Shantotto, Yuna, Wakka, Tifa Lockhart, and Vincent Valentine are usable. However, everybody starts with four heroes: Sazh, Warrior of Light, Rem, and Vivi. You won’t have to wait to get more of your favorites: more characters are available within the first chapter, and the game isn’t greedy in handing them out.

The meat of Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia are the battles, and in typical Final Fantasy fashion, they are turn-based. However, it has its own gimmick, thanks to the Bravery mechanic. Apart from damaging your opponent’s health, you will also have to reduce your enemy’s bravery gauge as much as possible. Turning it to zero will ensure that all of your attacks will result into critical hits. Also note that the amount of HP damage you deal depends on how much bravery you have saved up.

Things aren’t as simple as they seem though. There are elemental strengths and weaknesses to take note of, and you need to fight oversized and overpowered bosses, so a great deal of strategizing is necessary. Outside of the battles, the typical upgrade system, gear and character management, and choosing which characters are best for the battles come into scene. It’s likely that you will have a large roster of characters, and managing them won’t be easy. However, note that there are events that grant bonuses whenever you use a certain character. Grinding is slow and difficult, but you can take your time because there is no energy mechanic.

Overall, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia is another Final Fantasy mobile game worth playing. It delivers in terms of delivering a typical FF experience, but then again, it’s nothing special. The main appeal is its character roster, and it’s battle system has an interesting gimmick, making it worth a playthrough.
