Usually, the two concepts of post-apocalyptic world and sci-fi world are things that seem worlds apart from each other and combining them sounds like a recipe for absolute disaster but Evolution: Battle for Utopia takes that risk and quite surprisingly, it ends up paying off quite nicely because it makes for a game with a unique setting, great gameplay and some delightful visuals.
Despite being great at all other aspects, the introductory phase of Evolution: Battle of Utopia might not be the perfect kind that new players expect but regardless it gets the job done. Players who are just starting off are asked to create a profile after which they’re taken into a small test battle during which the game gives helpful tips in the form of dialogue boxes to aid newcomers get settled into things. Upon conclusion of the fight, players are given a few battery packs which are basically the in-game currency to help them acquire some equipment.
The gameplay itself feels really unique and really makes Evolution: Battle for Utopia stand out as it’s the kind that’s rarely, if ever, been seen before. Simply put, it’s a combination of turn based action and a few city building elements and this leads to a really enjoyable experience with lots of things to do.
The first thing to discuss is of course the turn based action. Players are basically put up against a foe, or multiple foes, and are tasked with bringing them all down by utilizing all their weapons and equipment. What gives this system so much depth is the fact that the decisions made must be fully thought through, players must know when to attack, when to heal and when to throw equipment such as grenades.
Target prioritization also becomes a factor when fighting multiple enemies so overall it’s a great system that’s easy to get the hang of but at the same time very rewarding if you dedicate a bit of time into fully mastering it. The city building elements consist of setting up your own colony full of regular town buildings as well defensive structures that will come into play when an enemy force decides to invade.
The amount of character upgrades in the game is pretty impressive. Players will have access to a shop that consists of tons of different kinds of weapons and tactical equipment that they can purchase through the money earned by defeating monsters and foes. There are also some puzzle based mini-games spread out here and there which have a few rewards of their own to offer.
As for the visuals, it’s surprising how amazing Evolution: Battle for Utopia looks despite being a mobile game. The battlefields are highly detailed, contain a ton of dynamic elements and are pretty massive. Character/Monster designs are unique, sharp and give his game a distinct look of its own. Above all else are probably the incredible fluid animations that make this game an absolute treat to look at thanks to all the eye candy there is to enjoy.
As for micro-transactions, players will be able to buy the standard currency of battery packs or the premium currency of crystals with real world money and both these can be used to purchase a variety of in-game items.
