The Gundam franchise is one of the most influential of all time. Towering and armed to the teeth, these large mechs spawned countless anime series, action figures, and of course, games. Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare is one of them, and it shakes up the formula. Instead of delivering you to a world akin to Gundam Seed or one of the old series, you’re dropped in a high school setting where you build your own mech and compete against other Gunpla fans in tournaments. With that in mind, is it something you’d want to dive into or are you better off playing other traditional Gundam games with a more sci-fi fantasy rooted story? Let’s check out what it has to offer:
Imagine walking home one day and a cute girl from your school asks you to be Gunpla partners so you can enter a tournament. You oblige her, make friends along the way, and learn the ropes of Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare. You somehow manage to win the tournament (which is the rather intuitive tutorial) which pits you against AI mechs. After which, you’ll then be tasked to enter more tournaments - and win them - so you can prevent your high school’s Gunpla club from shutting down.
Though the high school setting is a world away from the storyline of other Gundam games and series, Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare’s gameplay is similar to its peers. In a nutshell, you’re placed in maps with various biomes and landscapes to fight other Gunpla players. That being said, the controls are relatively intuitive: you’ll move around using a virtual joystick, while the attack and skill buttons are on the bottom of the screen. You can auto target an enemy and press the “go” button to have them immediately tail enemies. You can also use Ex Skills, which are devastating attacks, to turn the tide of battle in your favor.
Apart from the action-packed fights, a huge part of Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare’s appeal is its mech-building mechanics. Although most of the parts can only be attained through gachas (which is frustrating), you’ll be treated to a plethora of customization options that can literally enable you to build your mech from scratch. Weapons also vary from laser swords, rocket launchers, and laser guns and beams. It’s a must to equip your mech with your preferred weapons and playstyle before heading to combat. Note that mechs can be divided into several classes, ranging from Fighter, Defender, and Supporter.
In terms of presentation, Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare excels by providing decent graphics and textures in battle. Though the look dated and not up to par with newer games, they provide a satisfactory experience and stable frame rates. Meanwhile, the adventure cutscenes provide voiced dialogue and choices (that determine the dialogue) and are paired with top-notch anime sprites.
Overall, Gundam Battle Gunpla Warfare is a decent gacha game that provides decent battles featuring highly-customizable mechs. It’s a decent game and is something you’d want to play if you’re a fan of the Gundam franchise.
