Maze: Shadow of Light is one of those games you’ll play for hours. It is also one of those titles that are a little puzzling. Why in the world is it on a mobile platform when it’s decent enough to be a console game? In any case, you would not find a game on the market with graphics as rich and impressive like it. In addition, the developers did a decent job on crafting a plot and a background of the world, while introducing familiar action RPG elements we all know and love. With that said, is it something that lives up to the hype and a gameplay experience you’d want to undertake? Let’s find out.
In Maze: Shadow of Light, you first pick a hero to play as. Right now, there are three choices each with different skills and abilities, catering to to a variety of playstyles. The first hero is Resiak and his guardian companion named Tooth. Both are the strength-type of the trio, dealing damage with heavy attacks. Meanwhile, the next duo is Sina and Spirit, and both are essentially silent killers who swiftly kill enemies with precise strikes while dodging in the process. The last is Rai and her guardian Wise. Rai is a mage, dealing ranged damage with a variety of spells while Wise is her complete opposite: the spirit deals heavy melee damage with magical fists. Don’t worry about selecting a hero at the start as you won’t be stuck with them permanently. You can try out the different duos and find out which of the three suits your tastes.
A huge part of the gameplay involves you switching between your hero and companion. All you have to do to make this happen is to tap on the assigned button. You need to do this often in order to link up chain combos which can deal devastating damage to enemy units. Doing them doesn’t take much effort, as the controls are quite simple. In typical action RPG fashion, you move around using a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen, while a number of buttons on the right side host the attack, skill, and character swap buttons.
For the most part, you will hack, slash, and smash your way en route to destroying enemy hordes. You will enter stages in the main menu, advancing the intriguing story (which involves getting rid of corruption in the world), and earning rewards in the process. The first few stages are essentially tutorials, teaching you the game’s intricacies and introducing new mechanics, like upgrading weapons and your characters.
The graphics and overall presentation elements are where Maze: Shadow of Light shines the brightest. The colors are vibrant, and the visuals just feel like something from a triple A game, in league with the industry’s big wigs. Although the voice acting feels a little off and the text dialogue has some mistakes and is a little wonky, but the outstanding gameplay and graphics offsets these deficiencies.
Maze: Shadow of Light is arguably one of the best action RPGs made for mobile devices. Thought it features the tried and tested action RPG elements, its graphics are way too advanced for mobile games yet has almost zero framerate drops and texture-related gaffes. Along with the story experience comes a 2v2 PvP aspect, making it possible to play against or with your friends. The ease of the combat system makes it easy to learn, making it a game for everybody, including casual players and hardcore action RPG lovers. It is a game that WARRANTS a playthrough, so be sure to give it a shot!
