In Punishing: Gray Raven, humans have entered a new era where national borders and nations were no longer mutually exclusive due to the rapid development of nuclear fusion technology, intelligent robots, and cloning. Products have penetrated all aspects of human life, including food, clothing, housing, and transportation – even chip implants inside the body to protect everything in the field of mind and consciousness. Unfortunately, good times usually do not last forever. Mankind’s solution to the energy conundrum – a zero-point energy reactor, had given birth to a virus known as the Punishing.
This virus is able to infect the chips in human bodies, and it converts the host into a killing machine known as Corrupted. To save humans from extinction, survivors had fled into orbit and settled down on the orbiting space station, Babylonia. There, they have modified fellow humans into cyborg soldiers named Construct to retake Earth. The Constructs use a replicated human mind system, known as Inver-Device, to become immune to the infection so that they can fight the Corrupted despite being exposed to the virus. You, as the Commandant, will lead an elite Construct squad, named Gray Raven, to carry out various missions and fight to eliminate the Punishing infected enemies.
Aside from the intriguing background setting of the game, the main selling point of Punishing: Gray Raven is its truly exciting combat system and engaging gameplay. Unlike other mobile games, it does not implement an auto-battle and fast-forward mechanism. If you like Honkai Impact or Devil May cry, you will definitely enjoy its real-time action combat system. In this game, there are three types of constructors, namely attacker, tank, and support. There are three classes of Constructs (S, A and B). Some of them are good at melee attacks, while others are good at range attacks. Every Construct is unique with its own skillset. The Constructs are customizable and upgradeable. In the beginning of the game, players will receive an attacker Construct to begin the journey, but can gather more Constructs later in the game. As the Commandant, you can equip the Construct with different types of memory and compatible weapons to enhance the stats. The completion of the mission will reward players with all the required resources for the upgrade. Some resources can only be attained through specific missions.
The combat mechanism of the game is straightforward. There is an attack button, a dodge, and Orbs skill buttons on the lower right corner of the screen. Each Construct has three available skills, and these skills are represented by orbs of three different colors. Orbs are generated as you hit enemies with basic attacks. Special abilities can only be triggered by a specific sequence of the Orbs. You can even trigger cool-looking finisher moves after mixing and matching certain skill combinations. Players can hot-swap between Constructs during battle which adds a sense of manageability to the attack style. Players should know the abilities and combat style of each Construct well as spamming attacks mindlessly will not get you far in the game. Thoughtful planning to achieve attack combos is the key to win the battles, as your enemies will get stronger as the story progresses.
As a cyberpunk-themed game, Punishing: Grey Raven looks like a NieR: Automata-inspired work. The game is presented with a graphical novel-style cutscene. The visual art presentation of the game is generally muted in color, which is heavily reminiscent of NieR: Automata. The richly detailed and animated movements in battle are so remarkable that it is worthy of PC or console games. The music and sound effects used in the game are also praiseworthy! The integration of an amazing soundtrack with the smooth and sleek combat system is able to take mobile role-playing gaming to the next level!
