For some reason, there’s a large resurgence of Saint Seiya-related games. We’re not complaining though: it’s one of those old nostalgic manga and anime franchises that deserve a second wind. Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac does well in giving his franchise a much-needed lift. It’s a full-3D, turn-based hero-collecting RPG featuring most of the characters on the manga, from Seiya to Shun and even the goddess Athena herself. With that in mind, is this game worth a shot and does it stand out from the rest of the Saint Seiya crowd? Let’s check out what it has to offer.
At its core, Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac is a turn-based RPG where you can control up to five characters per battle. It is set up like a typical JRPG: you’ll go through the story mode, collect characters, and fight antagonists and enemies that are in your way. There are a lot of characters in the Saint Seiya universe, enough to provide a robust roster of heroes you can bring to battle.
Battles are set in a 3D field where characters take turns to perform attacks. Like other hero collectors, you can’t move your characters in Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac though you can choose the attacks and skills you want them to execute. Characters don’t have individual skill or mana gauges. Instead, all your heroes share the same resource bar which gradually fills up as the match proceeds. In addition, note that characters have linked attacks, so forming a team with characters that are closely affiliated is necessary. Though this is a great addition, it will require players who haven’t watched an episode of Saint Seiya to do a bit of reading and research. Apart from the campaign/story mode, you’ll also have PvP and co-op modes wherein you take out a rather imposing boss with another player. There are also quality of life features like auto-play and the option to speed up gameplay.
Outside of battle though most of what you’ll mostly assemble your roster for battle and go through quests. Most of which involve dialogue where you’ll interact with various characters, answering their questions and trivia. Dishing out the right answers correctly will grant you buffs and even avoid combat in certain parts. In a way, this makes the game a full-blown RPG. The overall experience rivals that of triple-A mobile titles and it’s quite surprising this title was published and developed by a smaller studio.
In terms of presentation, Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac is absolutely top-notch. It is arguably one of the better-looking and sounding hero-collectors out there. The developers definitely put in a lot of love into the IP and created a game that lives up and gives justice to the storied franchise. The game also features stellar Japanese voice acting which adds to the immersion and authenticity.
Overall, Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac is definitely a game you’d want to dive into, especially if you’re a fan of the franchise. It’s a fantastic hero-collector and is one of the best ones out there today. Give it a shot and dive into the cosmos!
