Despite the Naruto manga ending a few years back, there has been no shortage of related spinoff games, shows, and other content. We like it that way, and one of these spinoffs is Ultimate Ninja Blazing, a strategy mobile which deviates from the usual adventure + fighting Naruto games. Instead of fast reflexes and outstanding hand-eye coordination, you’re supposed to make use of your mind to develop strategies to beat enemies and complete missions. It’s a turn-based strategy game, and though this may sound queer considering the fast-paced content of Naruto, Bandai Namco overdid themselves with this one.
In the presentation aspects, Ultimate Ninja Blazing delivers. We fully expected a subpar Naruto strategy game made for the sake of earning extra, but you could clearly how much effort the developers placed into making it. The user interface is well-designed, and is reminiscent of the Naruto anime and games. Furthermore, the art style is spot on, both on the characters and the UI. Moreover, the musical tracks during the battles gives you an outstandingly immersive experience.
The tutorial is hosted by Hatake Kakashi, who is Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura’s teacher. Basically, you’ll get to play as Naruto in here, and Kakashi will your helper. With that said, you will be taught the basics and intricacies of combat, from movement, to attack, and on how to use combinations. Combination Attacks are lethal, and all you have to do to use them is put two of your controlled characters within in range of a couple of opponents. Moreover, you will also be taught on how to use Ninjutsu, which are basically special ninja techniques. One of the best elements of the game is that some ninjutsu scenes are fully illustrated and voiced. There is a short clip of Kakashi using his Lightning Blade ninjutsu, and this applies to other characters’ techniques as well.
You can set up a custom team in Ultimate Ninja Blazing. With each mission you complete, you can earn free characters and other rewards you can use to buy other usable characters. Moreover, each character has its own set of ninjutsu, and they can get stronger by completing missions and beating enemies. For example, you could have a powerful team of Naruto, Neji, Kiba, Rock Lee, and Shino. Bear in mind that one slot is reserved for a friend’s character!
Though it’s a simple game, there is a learning curve you will need to get over if you want to fully enjoy the game. For example, there are several elements in the game which are Heart, Wisdom, Bravery, Skill, and Body. These aren’t in the manga and anime, so you will have to learn their strengths and weaknesses from scratch. Thankfully though, the story mode lets you relive Naruto’s adventures, so if you’ve read the manga and watched the anime, you’ll be familiar with most of the scenes.
Although it’s arguably a fantastic Naruto game, you need to pay in-app purchases to unlock most characters. Though this won’t stop you from enjoying the game, this is an obvious cash grab on the part of the developers, knowing that if you’re a big Naruto fan, you’ll definitely end up spending real money on characters one way or the other. So, should you play Ultimate Ninja Blazing? Definitely, it’s a fun Naruto game which gives justice to the entire franchise. Though it’s a must to spend real money on premium characters, you’ll have tons of fun just by playing with the free characters.
