Sword Art Online is an anime - based on a fictional VR game - which took the anime world by storm a few years ago. Since then, it has grown into a cult favorite. If you’re a fan of the anime, you can sate the SAO cravings by playing Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag. It is made by Bandai Namco, the media company behind the anime and the SAO console games. If you haven’t watched the anime, don’t worry: you can dive in without knowing the story, and we’re sure you’ll love it. Basically, the story of SAO is intriguing: the creator of a VR game trapped 10,000 players in a game. If they die in the game, they die in real life, and the only way to escape is to beat the game by defeating the 100 bosses guarding the doors to the next floors.

Anyway, you will encounter most of the storyline Memory Defrag, so there’s no need to go through with it. That being said, the game presents the story in beautiful, fully-voiced and animated narratives. By the way, it’s all in Japanese dub with English subtitles. We highly recommend going through them, but if you want to delve into the action RPG right away, we won’t blame you: it’s highly addicting.

SAO: Memory Defrag is comparable to other Bandai Namco games wherein action is prioritized. It uses similar control schemes as the Naruto game, Ultimate Ninja Blazing, with a few quirky additions. In this case, swipes and taps enable you to move your character, as well as carry out attacks and special movements, such as the outstanding parry mechanic. Moreover, there are buttons around the user interface which let you carry out special moves, like Kirito’s Starburst Stream. You can also “switch” party members, which look awesome after a successful parry.

The combat system is amazing, but a little too ambitious for its own good. Elemental affinities and weapon compatibilities play a vital part, so be sure to pick the right weapons before entering the dungeons. However, we could safely say the fun is limited by the control gestures and mechanics which are quite difficult to master. For example, if you meant to move your character by swiping, they may end up jumping or worse, charge straight into an enemy attack. In short, it doesn’t give a precise experience, and this may affect the overall experience.

With that aside, the game’s content is astonishingly expansive. There’s the main storyline, along with a slew of side quests with a large variety. Furthermore, the characters you can end up using aren’t SAO-exclusive: there’s Leafa and Sinon, who are from other games in the SAO universe. As for multiplayer, you can team up with other players to fight bosses, but aside from this, there’s nothing to it yet. However, you can be sure that additions have been planned down the road. The character customizations are limited, however, they can be leveled up through merging them with extra characters.

So, is Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag worth it? It’s a fantastic game and we highly recommend it, even for people who haven’t watched SAO. If you can get through the far-from-precise controls, it’s an expansive game which will certainly get you coming back for more.
