Dragonica Mobile isn’t just a mobile port of the popular MMORPG Dragonica Online, but rather, it’s an all new game. Although you could say the character designs are bite-sized, since it’s on a mobile platform, it still retains the appeal of the original game. It’s close, but it’s not a home run by any means, simply because it’s from a different ball game. Dragonica Mobile has numerous features ported from the original, and thankfully, it’s a good thing.

Starting off and registering a new account isn’t a smooth experience though. You will need to create a LINE account to get started. Moreover, whenever you start the game, you’ll need to encode your account details which may be of a hassle to anyone used to the “tap to play” mechanism used by other games. These are relatively minor, but will certainly waste precious seconds and a little fingertip energy. It would have been better if you could

Dragonica Mobile isn’t an open world MMORPG, but rather, it’s a side-scrolling action game with dungeon crawling elements. The control schemes are comparable to Zenonia: simply tap on the buttons to to use skills, perform attacks, and use items. However, note that there are numerous buttons to press, so you will need to master the controls beforehand. It’s a side-scroller, yet a 3D game, and the character designs are comparable to anime chibi characters, which may or may not appeal to you.

Like the original game, Dragonica Mobile has multiple character classes, six in total, that you can pick. Each class has its own skills and attributes, so you can pick one according to your playstyle. These include the magic-wielding Warlock and Wizard, the armored Knight, battle-hungry Gladiator, the cutpurse Thief, and the stealthy Assassin. There are no deep character customization elements, given that you’re only allowed to choose your class, enter your character’s name, and pick the sex.

Although it’s a side-scroller, moving around Dragonica is comparable to expansive RPGs, especially in moving to new areas. There are towns and dungeons scattered all over the map, and here, you can meet your fellow players as well as NPCs who you can interact with and purchase items from. This is a great feature, but it may cause the game to run slower, especially if your internet connection is slow and your device is not powerful.

One of the biggest gripes in the game is you’re not able to go full grind simply because of an energy mechanism in place. Once the energy bar runs out, you’ll need to wait for it to refill, and it may take several hours. Regardless, there are a lot of things to do in the game, and these include Boss Raids (but only when you’re stronger) and a PvP mode.

So, should you be playing Dragonica Mobile? Though there are lag issues in crowded areas and side-scrolling gameplay may not appeal to everyone, Dragonica Mobile is a great RPG and is worth investing countless hours in. There is a learning curve you’ll need to pass, but it’s not a steep one. Moreover, the presentation and visuals are quite appealing, even if you’re not fond of anime-style designs. It’s a must-play game for every mobile RPG fan. Nuff said.
