Defend the world of Yggdra from the Black Army.

“Assemble and lead an army in forging your own story in this first-ever line defence role-playing game with over 5 million downloads worldwide!” That is what the play store tells you as you first encounter Chain Chronicles. It leaves you not knowing what to expect but apparently you would be leading the Volunteer Army in the defence of Yggdra and against the oncoming Black Army. It has set itself up for something big and who wouldn't be eager to see if it followed through.

In the game itself you end up in what they call line defence. This has a real time strategy element as you maneuver your troops to confront waves of enemies. All of this with a lovely little RPG element to it. The game can be played totally solo and you can get lost in the rich storyline or go toe to toe against other captains leading their own Volunteer Armies.

The main character you play is a previous unnamed hero; until you name him that is. He just wants to help and soon finds friends with your sprite guide Pirika and over 200 possible allies. The choices of allies and who you bring on your team are endless, with more allies being added as the game progresses. Not to mention having a sub team as back up or the ability to enhance various members of your group as you defeat more enemies and salvage the remains.

You will gain experience points through defeating the obstacles in your way and the optional quests you take, some which give more rewards than others. Of course the bigger the reward, the bigger the risk. But that world is out there for the exploring, go and make it safe. So far the game has been constantly added to like its Japanese version, so there is no true end in sight. The story is still unfolding.

Speaking of the world itself it has some beautiful artwork styling for the char and the backdrops. A very unifying and nicely over the top feel that many an RPG fan will appreciate, but could be argued is rather objectifying. The battles themselves are done out with 3D animations, not the most complicated of creatures but enough to give you a sense of the battle.

The battles themselves are quite smooth and easy to understand. The members of your party are easy to control and move, everything is marked out quite clearly. The special powers your units can gain are fun to use and timing will become more crucial as the learning curve increases. You can spend hours adjusting your team and its play style.

Your team does have a limited amount of energy though and if they run out of time you will have to wait for them to rest up. There are of course real money payments that can be made to speed this and a few little other processes up; but nothing that is overly ground breaking.

While this game won't be to everyone’s taste, some might find the artwork distasteful or the combat too much like tower defense. But for those of us that don't mind either of these we have an effectively endless game with thousands of options to keep you entertained.
