You’re in charge of assisting a group of hamsters in a mobile fortress. Join them as they roll through obstacles and fight their way through wave after wave of creatures wanting to stop them in their tracks.

In case you’ve handled idle adventure titles before, expect to manage every opportunity your furball army gets to power up. There is a lot of merging you’re going to do, the most obvious one being the weapons your rodent warriors use. You will forge the lowest-leveled weapons your smithy can produce, take two of them to create a higher-tier weapon, and keep at it until you get the best possible ones you can have at a given time.

Your hamster warriors are grouped based on the weapons they work best with. A sword icon at the top left of the unit’s portrait means they work best when given a melee weapon, a bow for ranged attackers, and a fireball or arcane symbol for magic-users. That won’t stop you from giving them the highest-tiered weapon not belonging to their classes, but you’re gimping their fighting potential. These furry heroes come in various rarities and are obtainable using the Hero Summon function found in the Hero menu. As with many hero collector games, rarer hamsters make better fighters due to higher stat builds. The ideal squad is composed of Red and Gold heroes: the two rarest ones in this game.

You merge 2 things in the game: weapons and hamsters. Weapon merging is the more obvious of the two since the smithing grid appears as early as you enter the game. The resident blacksmith forges the lowest-grade weapons you have, and your job is to pair them until the highest-grade armament is given to your warriors. Hamster merging happens when you get unit duplicates when summoning heroes. Getting the required number of copies allows you to level up your troops. Higher-level hamsters allow you to take on more difficult enemies and be the master of more domains.

Stats management is found in the Training menu. It’s categorized as Craft, Hero, Fortress, and Hammer. On the less clear subdivisions, Craft refers to the kind of weapons your forge produces, and Hammer is a player-triggered attack done by repeatedly tapping the screen. You can upgrade parameters in two ways: by using Gold that can be farmed in-game or through Gems you can get by completing missions or making in-app purchases. Upgrading is more streamlined in this game compared to similar team management or idle hero collector titles. There’s no need to spam or repeatedly tap the upgrades to feel progress here. You will also have to wait longer for funds to accumulate so that you can level up a needed stat.

Your progress is defined by how fast you can clear your main quest objectives. More content is unlocked the more missions you complete. Various dungeons can be beaten on increasing difficulty for Gems and other supplies to keep your moving fortress formidable.

Wrapping this up, Merge Hamster can be both easier and harder when it comes to idle RPGs. The ease of managing upgrades is offset by the mission-based questing system and unlocking new content.
