Despite its very generic name, Clash of Legends is very unlike any of the other “Clash”-named games (Hint: Clash of Clans) that I’ve played before... and it is very much uniquely so. Why? Let’s find out!

First off, the game’s a turn-based strategy game with more of a PvE aspect than a PvP aspect. In this game, you’ll need to recruit a band of heroes that you can then deploy whenever you go into combat. Each hero will get a turn to move up to 3 grids in every round or you could also choose to move a shorter distance just so you’ll be able to get the hero to attack a nearby enemy. Ranged units, mainly archers, on the other hand, are able to shoot any distance but their damage will decrease drastically if the range if over 6 grids in length.

The heroes’ respective speeds are used to determine which hero will move first in each round. Of course, you could also choose to wait out a turn or to reinforce your hero’s defense at the cost of a turn. After all, sometimes, it’s more strategic to get your opponent to waste a turn attacking you in this game since the game implements a counterattack mechanism. So, if an enemy attacks your hero, your hero will automatically return a blow of his/her own.

There are also plenty more strategies that you can use to maximize your heroes’ damage during combat while avoiding being killed. One such strategies involve fully utilizing the game’s damage bonuses for performing a side or rear attack. Of course, in your quest to maximize your heroes’ damage, you should also bear in mind to position them so that they won’t get rear-attacked in return. You could also make full use of the obstacles that are strategically scattered across the gridded battlefield.

Although you can steadily earn new and better heroes along the way, your heroes’ levels and skills also play important roles in ensuring victory. You can level up your heroes at the Hero Institute, upgrade existing skills and unlock new ones at the Skill Academy or even enhance your heroes if you have enough soulstones. Naturally, the more you improve your heroes, the better are you chances to grab that elusive victory – note: the game can be quite difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Most of the PvE stuff happens in the world map where you can clear away the mists to expand your vision’s boundaries and to reveal new locations that you can then conquer and capture. That being said, the PvP part is still very much alive and well in Clash of Legends, mainly in the form of the ranked PvP mode, Ladder League. You can also attack other player’s kingdoms on the world map at double the normal stamina cost.

The city development part, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward and simple. You are given a fixed number of construction slots - though you can always spend premium gems to buy more slots - and you can use them to build new structures or to upgrade what buildings you currently have. There are quite a variety of buildings that you can construct in Clash of Legends, ranging from the usual resource-producing structures, such as the gold and crystal deposits, to the more military-inclined buildings that allow you to summon new heroes, provide additional defense for your city and toe produce spells that can aid your heroes during combat.

Interestingly, the positions of each of the buildings are fixed, so how can you defend your city from attacks? Well, unlike games like Clash of Clans, Clash of Legends allow you to position your heroes on your city’s battlefield as the first and only line of defense. Here, you can pick which heroes, or even Guardians (basically heroes that can only be used for defensive purposes), to deploy and you’re set. You could go one step further and test the strength of your defensive forces via the Simulate button.

The graphics in Clash of Legends aren’t exactly distinctive especially if you compare it with games of similar names. However, the music in the game is amazingly good and does a great job of immersing you in the game. All in all, Clash of Legends is a very entertaining and addictive MMO strategy game with an intuitive turn-based combat and a fun selection of heroes for you to recruit and collect. The PvP in the game can be very competitive, but it’s nice that the game doesn’t really force you to participate in the PvP if you don’t want to.
