Whenever you hear ear-splitting and blood-curdling screams from your neighbor’s house, the best thing to do would be to call the police. But hey, where’s the fun and adventure in that? You can always follow the suit of the people in Hello Neighbor: stealthily creep around their creepy neighbor’s home and unravel his secrets without being discovered and escaping his clutches. It is essentially a stealth game originally made for PCs and consoles. Now on iOS and Android, how does the port stack up? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

First off, Hello Neighbor is a bit of a struggle at the start. Apart from a short graphic showing you the controls which consist of a virtual joystick and a number of action buttons (jump, grab and use items, and throw objects), you will have no guide. You will basically experience a baptism of fire, and you won’t have any clue of what you should do. Your first few hours will be a struggle, and considering that the game is a mix between a stealth and a puzzle experience.

In Hello Neighbor, you will walk around the neighborhood, but mainly focus on the antagonist’s house. A great deal of exploration and item-gathering is needed. Keys, magnets, and lockpicks will fill your inventory. Unfortunately, you will need to try out every keyhole to figure out the ones they fit. You can stack items together to get to hard-to-reach places or throw items at certain objects like windows to break them. Remember though, the neighbor is quite smart and will move around his home to try and find you. Once he detects you, it’s important to maintain your composure and hastily make your escape. If he manages to get close enough, you will be captured. Moreover, note that his AI adjusts depending on your past actions, like setting traps along the paths you traversed in.

These experiences are incredibly frustrating: there are no visual cues or even narrative indications which give you clues regarding where you can use them. Although this adds a layer of challenge, you could say that it’s subpar game design. It is unintuitive and a chore and unless if you’re heavily committed to finish this game, we don’t think it can sustain your interest for long. However, the mystery and strangeness of the neighbor’s tale is quite intriguing which is definitely enough to make you stay.

In terms of presentation, Hello Neighbor doesn’t particularly excel and the visuals are a downgrade compared to the console and PC versions. This is understandable, given that this is a mobile port. With that said, it’s a graphically decent port with little visual issues. Framerate drops are rare and the game looks good overall.


Although you will only have access to Act 1 since the succeeding episodes need to be bought, it will be enough for you to decide whether you wish to purchase the entire title. If you want an incredibly mind-boggling and frustrating experience without any guide or tutorials, then Hello Neighbor definitely a game you’d want to try out. Unfortunately, the gameplay loop feels more like work instead of play. Nevertheless, it has a certain appeal and is something stealth games who like a challenge would want to try out.
