Now, on to the basics of the gameplay... Just like most RPGs, you go through the storyline by talking through non-playable characters and triggering events. The central part of the gameplay, however, is the battle scene.

Combat is turn-based, and involves you assigning a maximum of four heroes against succeeding waves of enemies. Once the battle begins, all human intervention is gone and the AI (artificial intelligence) totally controls the progress of the combat.

Because it is turn-based, this means that you or the opposing team takes turns in attacking one another. The actual sequence appears to be determined by the AI from the individual statistics of each player, particularly speed. Each member of the teams will attack one by one, until the entire team has had their turn.

The sequence then repeats again, and ends only when one team is annihilated.

That’s as basic as the game could get with the combat. However, when each hero or villain has accumulated points after continually attacking, they could then attack using their special ability. This is the highlight of the combat system in DC Legends - special abilities come with amazing cut scenes rendered in high definition video.

As for the storyline, the game takes cues from the “Blackest Night” arc, and reinterprets it in its own way to fit the game. The storyline is easy to follow, of course. This means that, if you’ve read the comic books, you’ll know that villains and heroes from the DC Universe come together to fight a common enemy and that’s what you can enjoy here as well from the game.

Character development is highly challenging as well. You can upgrade both your characters’ gear and their special abilities. Of particular note is the Legendary form of each hero or villain; achieving that status will result to a face-lift and the receipt of a brand new and all-powerful final attack.

As for the equipment, you’d need to collect fragments and shards, which are given as loot after each successful battle. Higher tier equipment would need more rare fragments, which are not usually dropped but can be found by going up the leagues in Player vs Player (PvP) combat.

DC Legends may have suffered from some pitfalls during soft launch, but Warner Brothers Games has done a good job of re-tooling the game in response to the feedback from participants of the limited release.
