Ragnarok Online is one of the most memorable MMORPGs out there, and despite being a rather old title, it still appeals to countless players. After all, who can ever forget about going out with a party to Glast Heim to battle the Dark Lord’s forces? Thankfully, you can revisit old memories and give yourself a hint of nostalgia by playing Ragnarok Classic, a Ragnarok MMORPG you can play on your mobile device. Regardless if you’re new to the franchise or a grizzled veteran of numerous battles, would it be something you would want to try out? Let’s check what it has to offer.
In Ragnarok Classic, the first thing you’ll end up doing is to create a character and choose from a variety of job classes. These range from the Swordsman, Magician, Thief, Acolyte, and Archer. Unfortunately for Merchant-class fans, this job isn’t available, and it’s a little useless to sit down and set up shop along the streets in a mobile game, right? Note that each class has its own set of skills and techniques, along with a second job branch you will unlock when you reach a certain level. Some second job classes include Knight, Assassin, and Priest.
Once you’re done setting up, you will need to go through the rather boring and tedious tutorial. Although it orients you with the game’s basics, it doesn’t do a good job in making the process easy to absorb. You see, the tutorial relies on simply telling you where to point and tap without any effort into making it an immersive experience. You will traverse around the game’s multitude of confusing menus to upgrade skills and set hotkeys. Actions like trading, sitting down, and using potions requires their own buttons which you will set in the tutorial. Thankfully though, the controls are intuitive, with a virtual joystick used for movement and an attack button on the right side of the screen. The hotkeys are displayed on the middle which you use to activate skills and items.
Leveling up and progression uses the old Ragnarok methods. Basically, you’re trying to enhance two aspects to your character: his level and job level. When you level up, you earn stat points to improve your attributes like strength, speed, and intelligence. When your job level increases, you’ll be awarded with skill points to enhance your...you guessed it...skills.
Fighting monsters is rather simple. You can manually target a monster by tapping on it, or just use the game’s auto-target system. Simply tap on a skill in one of your hotkeys to use it. If pressing the attack button to execute a strike is tedious to you, the auto-attack mechanic will be pretty useful.
Apart from the usual Ragnarok Online mechanics, the developers also put up a mercenary dungeon system and they regularly hold events granting rich rewards. Considering that it is a free game though, it has microtransactions. It isn’t pay-to-win, but premium players have a definite advantage over those who aren’t.
Overall, playing Ragnarok Classic is a decent experience. It does not exactly give the classic RO experience due to a number of places and gameplay elements omitted, but it’s worth a playthrough whether you’re a new player or someone who has played the game years back.
