Beasts Evolved: Skirmish is highly compared to the popular PlayStation game Patapon, and for a lot of good reasons. The art style is strikingly similar, using cartoonish silhouettes and shadowy shades. However, it’s far from being a carbon copy, because it’s extremely different in terms of gameplay. You see, you get to play as some sort of a monster collector in Beasts Evolved, and your goal is to breeze through the story while strengthening and evolving a varied roster. It has a fairly unique way of telling stories, having items created for you, and of course, its art direction. With that said, is it a game you would want to play? In a nutshell, Beasts Evolved: Skirmish plays most like RPG hero-collector games like Seven Knights and Brave Frontier, but with a different battle system. Progression throughout the single player campaign is pretty much like any other game on the market, being stage-based. You will be put on a large map with interest points all over it. You need to complete them in order to unlock more stages to progress through the story. Though the map may look convoluted at first, everything else pretty straightforward.

The battles are the main draw of Beasts Evolved: Skirmish. They are set on a 2D arena-like environment wherein the monsters go at from the start. It’s not the traditional “reduce the enemy team’s HP to zero” thing, but it has more depth into it. Although killing the enemy team is one of the ways to finish a stage, you can also push them back enough to “conquer their territory”, giving you the victory. It’s a rather simple formula, but developing a perfect strategy and a team isn’t a simple undertaking. You see, stages have enemies which may have different capabilities. The battles are relatively short, tailor-made for a mobile experience.

There are several types of monsters in Beasts Evolved: Skirmish, and each of them have different abilities which suggest what their roles are. For example, there’s a monster type that lets you knock back opponents with deadly efficiency, while others act as tanks, healers, while others deal damage from behind. There is no foolproof combination of monsters that work in every level, which means you need to adjust your team depending on what your opponents are. Battles are automated, although you can activate certain spells on the bottom of the screen which can deal damage or restore HP.

Evolving monsters is a huge part of the gameplay. Every monster has its own evolutionary tree, and although they may look rather dull at first, they will look cooler as they level up. They start off as black shadows but as they get stronger, more colours will be added into their bodies.

Overall, Beasts Evolved: Skirmish is a decent monster-collecting strategy game you definitely need to try out. Although it has a rather interesting and for adults-only item summoning system (that works like loot boxes), the gameplay and art direction are fantastic, exceeding expectations.
